Birds parts, Bulldogs, Corn Children, Roman military and Gobblers win on New Year’s Day

Sorry I’m late but Brooke hosted a slumber party for six of her friends last night…New Year’s eve can’t hold a candle to a little girls sleepover. Pizza, sa’mores, jumping rope, bike riding, chocolate-chip pancakes, doing their nails…From what I did catch of the games, the Gator Bowl was probably the most entertaining with a close finish. Iowa and USC won in blowouts. Georgia and Virginia Tech won without any drama. Best as I can figure, our little contest is between “money bags” Garreth and Mr. Highland Lakes (David W.).

Hawkeyes pluck Gamecocks
The Iowa Hawkeyes scoured early and often in an easy win (31-10) over the South Carolina Gamecocks in the Outhouse Bowl. The Hawkeyes scored the first touchdown of 2009 less than 8 minutes into the game, they scored the second touchdown at 4:41 in the first quarter, they scored the third TD of 2009 at 8:09 in the 2nd quarter…I think you see how this is going. Iowa waited until the 3rd quarter to kick the first field goal of 2009 and scored another TD for 31-0 lead heading into the forth quarter. Impressive stat of the game/year…Iowa running back Shonn Green is the only player to rush for at least 100 yards in every game this season

Bulldogs Bite Spartans in Second Half
The Georgia Bulldogs trailed 6-3 at the half of the Capital One Bowl, but rallied for 21 second-half points to dash the hopes of the Michigan State Spartans (yet another Big 10 school). Final score 24-12. Georgia improved to 7-0 all-time vs. Big Ten schools in bowl games. Balmy, 67-degree temperatures were near perfect but a 24-mph cross wind was a major factor, as both teams depended on their ground games with little to show for it.

Nebraska shucks Clemson Tigers
The Nebraska Cornhuskers came from behind in the 2nd half to steal the Gator Bowl from the Clemson Tigers 26-21. Nebraska trailed for most of the game but gained the lead late in the 3rd quarter. The “children of the corn” scored on every possession in the third quarter. Leading 26-21, the Cornhuskers had to withstand a game ending Tiger attack after Clemson had first and goal from the ten. Nebraska ended the season with a four-game winning streak, won six of its final seven games and won a January bowl game for the first time in nine years.

Trojans Stop and Smell the Roses
The USC Trojans handled the Penn St. Nittany Lions as most expected. USC dominated the first half taking a 31-7 lead and won easily 38-24. USC scored four touchdowns and a field goal on five consecutive first-half possessions for its 24-point halftime lead. USC quarterback (Mark Sanchez) had a stellar performance with 413 yards passing and 4 TDs. Early penalties and turnovers kept PSU from making a game of it. The first play from scrimmage epitomized PSU’s day – Lions sacked and caused a fumble they recovered but was negated by an off-sides penalty. PSU tried to make a game of in I the second half but turnovers prevented a serious comeback. The Nittany Lions scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to make the final score respectable. USC won its ninth straight vs. the Big Ten. The Pac-10 finished the postseason 5-0. Maybe that conference wasn’t so weak after all.

Hokies declaw “teddy” Bearcats
The Virginia Tech Hokies (extra credit for knowing what the heck a Hokie1 is) spotted the Cincinnati Bearcats 7 points then showed them “Beamer ball” at it’s best winning the Orange Bowl 20-7. This BCS Bowl was between “champions” of a couple of mediocre conferences (Big East & ACC). The VT game ball went to…Cincinnati quarterback who had a horrendous game including 4 interceptions (1 in the end zone and one at their own 10-yard line) and being stopped at the 1-yard line on a 4th and goal play to end their chance of a comeback. The Hokies won their fourth consecutive game to end at 10-4, their fifth straight 10-win season. That's the third longest active streak in the nation behind Texas (8) and USC (7). 1(The mascot is the
HokieBird, a turkey-like creature. The teams were originally known as the "Fighting Gobblers," and the turkey motif was retained despite the name change.)

It’s a real shme the marque BCS bowls are on the FOX network. Fox is horrible…lack of replys, promo graphics covering the plays, announcers that are less than average, too much self promotion for their own programming. From the announcing, to the band shots, to the pre game show, everything fox does in college football is pathetic.

Standings
At the top of our leader board, it’s pretty much all over except the crying and prize presentation. While Mr. Highland Lakes (David W.) and “ex lab rat” Loel were able to make up a game on “money bags” Garreth, it will be tough to make up the two games that now separate them. Make that impossible for Loel since he and Garreth only differ on one of the remaining games. It will take some upsets for David to gain ground. He differs from “money bags” on four of the remaining seven games but is counting on Ohio State and Tulsa for wins. “Random” rusty was the big winner yesterday hitting all five games. Honorable mentions go to not only Loel and David W. but also Angel and Tom “jack” for their 4 for 5 showing.

And its official, Rich W. will not be “Mirror” Award winning for a second year in a row. With his 15 correct picks he’s guaranteed a middle of the pack finish. Looks to be about seven pickers with realistic “hopes” of getting the “Mirror.” Dale is all by himself with just 11 correct but he is within striking distance of two Hegs, Kainer and myself (now that really hurts). Jerry and Tom “jack” are two games up but still potential victims. You know it’s sad when you’re comparing your picks to Dale in hopes that you agree (just so he can gain ground).

Three more games today starting at 1:00 (fox) with Texas Tech (-4) and Mississippi in an “end of an era” Cotton Bowl. This is the 73rd and final Cotton Bowl to be played in the Cotton Bowl. Next year they move to the new Jerry Jones shrine (Cowboys stadium). The late game (also on fox) is the Sugar Bowl with undefeated, #7 Utah playing once beaten and ranked #4 Alabama (-9). Sandwiched in between is the Liberty Bowl with the Pirates from East Carolina (-3) and Kentucky.
