Evolution or Creationism?

That's a little too deep for this bowl contest. However, evolution took a backseat in Tuesday’s bowl games, when the birds/reptiles stuck it to the mammals as the Owls, Ducks and Terps beat the Broncos, Cowboys and Wolf Pack.

Terps hold off Wolf Pack
In the Humanitarian Bowl, and our annual dose of the blue field, the Maryland Terps scored two forth quarter touchdowns and held off a determine Nevada Wolf Pack in a high scoring 42-35 contest. In yet another sign of climate change – No snow on the blue field and most players were in short sleeves. Several players for Maryland were suspended “from the start” for violating team curfew rules…what the heck did they find to do after 10 pm in Boise, Idaho?

Maryland used big plays including a 100-yard kick-off return to gain a 20-14 lead. They grabbed the momentum going into halftime when they scored another TD with just 6 seconds in the half. They made the 2-point conversion on a nice “pick” play to go up 28-14. Nevada scored the first two touchdowns in the second half to tie the score at 28 early in the forth quarter. The tie didn’t last long as Maryland scored on a 54-yard run up the middle at the 12:21 mark. The Turtles scored again a couple of minutes later to put the game out of reach.

Fifteen prognosticators picked this upset…granted Nevada was favored by only1 point.

Ducks (and) Roll the Cowboys
The Holiday Bowl was an offensive shoot-out that most folks anticipated. In the end, the Oregon Ducks defense tackled better than did the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the 42-31 game. The Ducks rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit with five second-half touchdowns to win their second straight bowl game. Make sure you catch the highlight of the big Oregon running back hurdling the Cowpoke defender on his way to the TD that sealed the win.

Most of us (18) missed this one with our Big 12 loyalty…but so did ‘Vegas.

Owls Fly Over Broncos
In the “who gives a hoot” Texas Bowl, the Rice Owls flew by the Western Michigan Broncos for their first bowl win since 1954. It was a blowout 38-14. Rice lead 38-0 before allowing a couple of meaningless TDs.

Most of us (14) followed the line and got this one correct.

We’re at the midway point of the Bowl Season and maybe we’re not so bad after all with our picks this year. Thirteen of us are as good or better than the ‘Vegas line (9-8). Then there’s Tom…at 6-11 he’s our leading candidate for the Mirror Award. And as the old adage goes…”the apple doesn’t fall from the tree” as Trent and Bryce keep Dad company in the cellar. Boy, wouldn’t that be something if the Mirror goes to a family! Speaking of family affairs…Mr. and Mrs. Highland Lakes (David and Leslie) are tied for second with 11-6 records. So, Leslie will it be “heads or tails” if it comes down to a coin flip? The other girls are now in the middle of the pack…ahead of some of us, trailing others. Looks like a few “man cards” are safe for another year.

Hold on to your hats, get the popcorn and adult beverages ready as we have 10 games in the next two days. Five today starting at 11:00 and another 5 on New Year’s Day.

Happy New Year! Hope you and your family have a happy, prosperous and healthy 2009.

"Cat Fight" at the Alamo

Joined the Papajohns.com Bowl in the middle (uh, closer to the end) of the third quarter with NC State leading 17-9 and thought “boring.” But the last quarter and half was anything but, as the Scarlet Knights from Rutgers staged a comeback to take down the North Carolina Wolf Pack by a final score of 29-23. The Scarlet Knights outscored NC State 23-6 in the second half. The game had 5 lead changes. Both schools entered the bowl with winning streaks…Rutgers at 6 and NC State at 4. Add to that, Rutgers started the season 1-5 but has won three straight bowl games. The Big East is now 3-0 in bowl play and 2-0 against the ACC.

NC State held a 17-6 halftime, but their starting quarterback was knocked out of the game with a strained knee late in the first half and did not return. The Scarlet Knights scored 10 consecutive points in the third quarter including a TD following a blocked punt to get close at 17-16. With 7:06 to play and Rutgers leading 26-23, NC State had the ball near mid-field but threw their second interception of the game. The Scarlet Knights milked the clock down to 0:47 before kicking a field goal and a 29-23 lead. The game ended on a desperation pass that was intercepted on the Rutgers 20-yard line. NC State turned the ball over four times, including one lost fumble and the three second-half interceptions.

Twelve pickers (55%) got this game correct as did the ‘Vegas line but Rutgers didn’t cover the spread (-7).

Who doesn’t enjoy a good “cat fight” every now and then? All that scratching, clawing, hair-pulling and boob bouncing…but I digress. In the end, it was the Missouri Tigers over the Northwestern Wildcats 30-23 in an OT thriller at the Alamo Bowl. The Wildcats gave Missouri all they could handle in the most entertaining and exciting game thus far in the 2008_09 Bowl Season. Northwestern used ball control (18 mins.) and the lack of mistakes (0 penalties) to take an early lead. Missouri didn’t score a touchdown until a 75-yard punt return with 1:30 to go until halftime, but that was enough for a 10-10 tie. Keep in mind, Northwestern hadn’t won a bowl game since 1949 (a feat the Irish couldn’t match!).

The second half was a back-n-forth battle as each team had the lead but couldn’t hold. Missouri’s vaunted QB (Chase Daniels) threw too many (3) interceptions and tried too hard in his final college game in his home state. Mizzu had a chance to win in regulation but their 44-yard field goal attempt sailed just right as time expired.

In OT, Missouri scored a TD rather easily to take a 30-23 lead. Northwestern moved the ball on their possession but on 3rd and goal from the eight, their quarterback was sacked and fumbled back to the 32-yard line. The 4th down “hail Mary” fell to the turf in the end zone.

The quote of the day goes to Chase Daniels…”the game was won by my teammates, in spite of myself.” This was the first bowl game for the Big 12 so they start at 1-0 and marks the second loss for the Big-10 (0-2).

Loel and David W. made-up a game on Garreth (11-4). David’s wife, Leslie (Ms. Highland Lakes) moved into a tie for third with Bass, Brooke and “Random” Rusty. (* For those of you paying attention, David and Leslie each gained an extra game when I found another break in the spreadsheet. Remember to check your picks and keep me honest.) Jerry slipped in his picks on the day and now joins “the T. Hegs” (Tom & Trent) and Dale in the cellar at 5-9.

On Tuesday, we have a “trifecta” of bowl games starting with Maryland vs. Nevada on the blue field in the Humanitarian at 3:30 and followed by the Texas and Holiday Bowls at 7:00. Most of us will be watching the Holiday Bowl (Ok State vs. Oregon) since the Texas Bowl (Rice vs. somebody) is on the NFL Network (what’s up with that?).

La. Tech Wins "Dogfight"

Louisiana Tech (Bulldogs) prevailed over Northern Illinois (Huskies) in the Independence Bowl last night by a score of 17-10. It was the Bulldogs first bowl win since 1977. Turns out La. Tech was a fill-in team since neither the SEC nor Big 12 could provide an eligible team. While the Huskies had more total yards (339-236), turnovers (3) really hurt. Much of the scoring and all the big plays came in the first half. The teams traded field goals on their first possessions of the second half, then played to a stalemate the rest of the way. Although it did look like there might be a last minute score to change the outcome, neither team could score…thank goodness, ‘cause I rested my eyelids during the last 4 minutes of the game. MVP went to a defensive player from La Tech but should have gone to their punter. That guy pinned at least 4 punts inside the 20 yard line (and 2 inside the 5) to keep Northern Illinois with a long field.

We Suc!!
In case you haven’t notice, we are not too good at picking the winners of the bowl games…at least in the first twelve games. Out of the possible correct picks (12 * 22 = 264) only picked 134 (.508) correctly. Heck, flipping a coin would give the same odds…hmmm, might explain why Brooke is doing so well!! Of the twelve so far, we have only had a majority of our pickers be correct in 4 games. The ‘Vegas line is only slightly better with a 7-5 record.

Garreth (10-2) extended his lead to 2 games over a passel of others (8-4). (FYI…a passel is five). Dale maintains his lead (?) for the Mirror Award at 3-9. A couple of Hegemiers and myself are preventing him from becoming too lonely.

Two games today and three tomorrow as we start building to the frenzy of New Year’s Eve (5) and Day (5). Today it’s the Papajohns and Alamo Bowls (bet there are still some seats available).

Many "Man Cards" in Jeopardy

Bears, ‘Injuns and Mountain Men – it was good to be a mascot reminiscent of the old ‘settler days on Saturday as Cal., Florida State and West Virginia won. Two out of three games were worth watching, with a blow-out sandwiched in the middle. ACC conference teams played in all three games but came out with a 1-2 record for the day.

In the early (Meineke) game, ‘Vegas had this one as a “pickem” and that’s how it played out. West Virginia overcame a late safety to win by a point (31-30). The game started out like “gang busters” with lots of scoring in the first half. North Carolina led at halftime 23-21. The 3rd quarter was more defensive and the forth had some drama. There were 5 led changes in the game including the last one that had WV go ahead with 7 minutes to play. Stat of the game... 4-0. Pat White (WV – quarterback) became the first player to win four bowl games as a starting quarterback. UNC had their chances including a first and goal but were held out of the end zone, however they did record a safety after WV took over on downs at their own 1-yard line. Player you’ll see on Sundays…North Carolina receiver Hakeem Nicks – who caught 8 passes for 217 yards and 3 TDS. He is awesome.

In the Champs Sports Bowl, Wisconsin and Florida State did some “trash talking” before the game. That was about the only opportunity for the Badgers to jaw as the Seminoles took them to the wood shed in a 42-13 blowout. FSU punter gets the academy award for his “flop” on a punt in which the Wisconsin player missed him completely but he went down anyway and the Ref bought it.

In the “green nuts” Bowl, this one could have gone either way but a timely turnover coupled with Miami’s poor clock management allowed the “golden bears” to pull out the win (24-17). The Miami freshman quarterback did an excellent job stepping in for their suspended starter. However, the player of the game was Cal running back Jahvid Best who rushed for a bowl-record 186 yards and two touchdowns (on just 20 carries). With time running down in the 4th quarter and a 17-17 score, Cal missed a 34-yd FG attempt that would have given them the lead. Miami took over but on 3rd down the QB was sacked and fumbled the ball. Cal recovered on the 3 to set up the winning score. Miami had a final chance but poor clock management let the opportunity slip away as time expired with Miami still with a timeout.

We have a new leader as Garreth overtook “Random” Rusty for first place with 9-2 record. Brooke “who did I pick in this one Daddy?” and Fanchon “I know cricket” Hayes are tied for third with Loel and Dave “the Irish jinx is over” Bass. For you “manly men” (especially those with less than 6 wins), you might consider going to see the Christmas movie “Marley and Me”…take your Kleenex, because it’s a good cry!!

One game today with the In”depends”ence Bowl…should be a real pisser with Northern Illinois vs. La. Tech.

Owls Scalp Chippewas in Motor City Bowl

Florida Atlantic pulled a bit of an upset in the Motor City “2 out of 3 ain’t bad”* Bowl last night by beating the Central Michigan Chippewas 24-21. The Owls were a 6-point underdog but never trailed in a rather lack-luster game. Florida Atlantic led 7-0 after the first quarter but a nice 1-handed catch by the ‘Chipp’s receiver in the corner of the end zone tied the game at 7 early in the second quarter. Granted, Central Michigan had a few questionable calls go against them, but that’s to be expected in these low-tiered bowl games. The Chippewas made it interesting at the end as they scored a TD plus the 2-point conversion to get within a FG with 3 minutes to play. However, the Owls recovered the on-side kick and ran out the clock.

Central Michigan has lost three straight bowl games (Note to self…do not pick the Chippewas next year, even with the cool mascot name.)

(It was the smallest turnout in the game's 12-year history, yet Motor City Bowl chairman said the game will return to Ford Field in 2009 despite Detroit's dismal economic forecast. *Chrysler pulled out of its Motor City Bowl sponsorship commitment in early November, leaving Ford and General Motors as the game's major sponsors. Maybe next year it will be the Toyota/Honda Bowl!)

Not much changed in our leader board as most the front-runners went with the underdog in this game. Tom and Dale picked the favorite and remain in the cellar with only 1 correct pick so far this season. Leslie W. separated herself “Mirror” candidates.

Three games today starting at noon with the Meinke Bowl. It’s West Virginia vs North Carolina in another toss-up pick. Then there’s the Champs sports Bowl that will either be a close defensive game if Wisconsin can hang with Florida State (-5) speed. Or it will be a blow-out for FSU. In the nite-cap game from San Francisco, it’s the Emerald “nuts” Bowl featuring California (-6) and Miami – if the Hurricanes have enough players left to take the field.

Irish Drought Ends

OK, Ok, so maybe the Irish of Notre Dame stayed away from the Poi and actually showed up in the aloha state to play football. In a lopsided Hawaii Bowl, Notre Dame embarrassed the Rainbow Warriors 49-21. The Irish quarterback set all kinds of passing records, including 401 passing yards and 5 TD passes. The pass rush of Hawaii was non-existent and the secondary slow (maybe they partook in a little too much home grown “Maui gold”…and that’s not pineapples). Notre Dame's victory was its first in the postseason since the 1993 season. For extra credit…Who was the last team that Notre Dame beat in a Bowl game?

Tonight’s bowl game is the Motor City “Bailout” Bowl. This is one of the least appealing bowl match-ups pitting the Central Michigan “Chippewas” against Florida Atlantic but just as important in our little contest. Look for a shootout as both schools scored more than 50 points in the regular season finales. Now that we’re done with the pre-Christmas appetizer bowl games, things start heating up. There is at least one and often times several bowl games everyday through New Year’s Day.

Rusty maintains a 1-game lead but the rest of the pack is getting a little more crowded as Loel and Garreth move into a second place tie with Brooke. Leslie took the Irish and separated herself from the “bottom feeders” – Tom and Dale.

Horned Frogs Saddle Broncos

The TCU Horned Frogs scored 17 unanswered points to overcome a 13-0 first half deficit and win their fourth straight bowl game. No. 11 TCU out rushed #9 (and previously undefeated) Boise State 275-28 in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. TCU did the Lone Star State proud as the first of 5 schools from Texas in this season’s bowl challenge. It was the TCU defense that allowed the Horned Frogs to stage a second half comeback. Trailing 13-7 at halftime, TCU allowed only 1 second-half field goal.

This marks the forth straight bowl win for the Horned Frogs from Ft. Worth…the seniors on this team never lost a bowl game. (Note to self…pick the freaking Frogs next year!!) Quit a feat when you consider the seniors from Notre Dame (more on that later). This game crushed the hopes of a perfect season…for Boise State, Rusty and Dale (never mind Utah is still to play). Rusty missed his first pick, while Dale got his first win. Brooke moved up to tie Rusty for first place and Dale now has some company in the cellar – Tom Heg (whose two sons are making the “old man” look bad) and Mrs. David “Leslie” Williams (not to be confused with David’s “other girlfriend”) are all sitting at a “Mirror” inspiring 1-5.

While ‘Vegas got the winning team correct, the frogs didn’t cover the spread (3). Norte Dame is favored by 1.5 in tonight’s Hawaii Bowl. Can the Irish end their 15 year drought without a bowl win? I think NOT! The Irish have lost an NCAA record setting 9 straight bowl games dating back to 1994. Since ND’s last bowl win, 89 of 199 schools have won in the post season. Hawaii has 4 wins during that span…all in the Aloha State. Too many luaus and hula dancers will have them distracted.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Cool Kwanzaa, Felix Navidad and Bah Humbug should just about cover it. Hope you have a wonderful Holiday Season. It’s unlikely there will be another update until Friday or so.
